Delhi-NCR Implements GRAP-1 to Combat Rising Air Pollution

The Delhi government has activated GRAP-1 to tackle air pollution, enhancing measures for dust control and vehicle regulations.

New Delhi, October 21 (Daily Kiran) : The Delhi government has initiated the first phase of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP-1) across the National Capital Region (NCR) following a spike in the Air Quality Index (AQI). Manjinder Singh Sirsa, the Minister for Industry, Environment, Food and Supply, announced that all relevant departments have been instructed to intensify their efforts immediately to control pollution.

Under GRAP-1, stricter measures have been implemented concerning dust mitigation. Agencies are mandated to ensure 100% street cleaning using mechanical road sweepers.

To curb open burning of waste and other materials, teams will monitor streets around the clock. Additionally, coordination with Delhi Police and traffic authorities has been enhanced to alleviate pollution caused by traffic congestion, ensuring smoother vehicle movement.

During a press briefing, Sirsa shared that he personally inspected various parts of the city to identify areas severely impacted by traffic jams. The government aims to reduce pollution levels through improved traffic management.

He also issued a stern reminder regarding the Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate, urging drivers not to operate vehicles in Delhi without a valid certificate. Violators will face penalties.

Moreover, surveillance has intensified on non-essential vehicles entering Delhi via the Eastern and Western Peripheral Expressways to prevent additional pollution pressure in the capital. Strict actions are being taken against industries and non-compliant units, with teams conducting inspections to ensure adherence to pollution regulations.

The government has also ramped up Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) activities to raise awareness about pollution control measures. The monitoring mechanism on the Green Delhi 311 app has been strengthened for quicker resolution of citizen complaints.

Sirsa urged Delhi residents to comply with GRAP-1 guidelines, report pollution-causing activities through the Green Delhi app, and contribute to cleaning the capital’s air.
