Delhi Metro to Increase Train Frequency Amid Pollution Concerns

Starting October 22, Delhi Metro will boost train services to encourage public transport usage and combat rising pollution levels.

New Delhi, October 21 (Daily Kiran) : As air pollution levels rise in New Delhi, the Graded Response Action Plan-I (GRAP-I) will take effect on Wednesday. In response, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has announced significant changes. Beginning October 22, the DMRC will increase the frequency of trains during weekdays, from Monday to Friday.

The DMRC plans to add 20 more train services across its entire network on these days. This initiative aims to encourage commuters to opt for public transport over private vehicles, thereby reducing pollution caused by traffic.

In addition to enhancing train services, the DMRC will implement several measures to mitigate dust levels at construction sites, remove dust from surrounding roads, and clear waste from road medians. Engineers from the DMRC will closely monitor construction areas and adjacent roads to ensure that materials are properly covered and that wheel washing facilities for outgoing vehicles are functioning effectively.

The DMRC emphasized that these actions are part of a broader strategy to tackle pollution, complementing existing measures already in place. Currently, approximately 31 kilometers of roads in the city fall under the temporary jurisdiction of the DMRC, which has taken over their management to facilitate smooth construction while preventing increased pollution. Most of these roads have already undergone repairs by the DMRC to ensure minimal environmental impact.

To further reduce dust levels, over 250 anti-smog guns or mist guns have been installed at construction sites, stations, and office buildings. The DMRC’s environmental department conducts daily inspections to ensure compliance with all environmental regulations.

Anuj Dayal, the Principal Executive Director of Corporate Communications, noted that pollution levels typically rise in Delhi before winter, and the metro is committed to taking all necessary steps to address this issue.
