New Delhi, April 25: In a bid to strengthen democratic participation, the Delhi Assembly inaugurated a weekly ‘Youth Outreach Program’ on Saturday. This initiative, led by Speaker Vijender Gupta, welcomed the first batch of 75 college students.
An official reported that the inaugural group of students came from Maharishi Valmiki College of Education in Geeta Colony.
The program establishes a continuous framework where students from universities and educational institutions will visit the Assembly every Saturday to gain firsthand experience of legislative operations.
During the visit, students learned about the historical development of the Delhi Assembly, including the significance of the current building, which was established in 1912 and previously housed the Central Assembly.
The legacy of Vitthalbhai Patel and the Assembly’s ongoing role as a platform for democratic governance since its re-establishment in 1993 were also highlighted.
The statement mentioned that the program includes a structured orientation session on legislative processes and institutional operations.
On this occasion, a commemorative coffee table book titled ‘A Century Journey’ was unveiled, along with a documentary on the Assembly’s institutional history, narrated by Padma Bhushan awardee Anupam Kher.
The tour also featured a guided experience, allowing students to engage directly with the Assembly’s workings.
While announcing the ‘Youth Outreach Program’, the Speaker emphasized that the initiative aims to bridge the gap between citizens and institutions. It will enable young people to connect directly with legislative processes, understand how laws are made, and learn about the principles that uphold public life and democratic governance.
Gupta stressed that the strength of democracy relies on informed, conscious, and responsible citizens. He noted that maintaining continuous engagement with institutions is crucial for fostering a culture of participation, accountability, and respect for democratic processes.
He further stated that such initiatives play a vital role in awakening civic consciousness among youth and strengthening the foundation of a democratic society.
The program is part of a systematic initiative by the Delhi Assembly Secretariat aimed at raising awareness about parliamentary practices and democratic institutions. It is designed to encourage students to stay continuously connected with public affairs and legislative processes.
