New Delhi, October 15 (Daily Kiran): Air quality in Delhi-NCR has once again dipped to hazardous levels after nearly four months of relative relief. On Wednesday morning, a thick blanket of smog covered several parts of Delhi and its surrounding cities, prompting authorities to enforce Stage-1 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) from Tuesday itself.

According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Delhi’s average Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 206 at 7:30 a.m., falling under the ‘poor’ category. Nearby NCR cities also reported worrying levels — Faridabad at 189, Gurugram 156, Ghaziabad 145, Greater Noida 123, and Noida 136.

In most parts of Delhi, AQI readings remained between 200 and 300, while some areas recorded figures between 100 and 200, placing them in the ‘moderate to poor’ range.

Under GRAP Stage-1, the focus is primarily on controlling dust pollution. All construction and demolition sites in Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram, and Faridabad have been directed to use anti-smog guns. Projects larger than 500 square metres must now operate under an approved dust management plan, and open storage or transportation of loose construction materials will be strictly monitored.

The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has warned of heavy fines or closure orders for vehicles and construction sites found violating pollution control norms. Officials confirmed that Delhi government and local administration teams are conducting continuous inspections to ensure compliance.

Experts have advised residents—especially the elderly, children, and those with respiratory illnesses—to avoid outdoor activities during early mornings and evenings. Wearing protective masks while stepping out has also been recommended. Authorities fear pollution levels could worsen further during the upcoming Diwali season.
