Mumbai, 15 November (Daily Kiran). Deepika Padukone’s call for an 8-hour work shift after becoming a mother has sparked a major debate on social media. Reports had earlier claimed that her demand led to her exit from two big projects — Spirit and Kalki 2. Now, the actress has spoken openly about how motherhood has changed her perspective.

In an interview, Deepika said overworking should not be normalised. She added that people often mistake burnout for commitment, which is unhealthy. “After becoming a mother, I have developed a new understanding of work. I feel a deeper respect for my own mother. Managing work and motherhood may look simple, but in reality, it is far more challenging. New mothers need strong support when they return to work, and I hope this is taken seriously,” she said.

Speaking on the issue of long working hours, Deepika stressed that extended shifts affect both health and the quality of work. “We have normalised overworking. Eight hours of work is enough. If you are not healthy, you cannot give your best. Burnout benefits no one — not the artist, not the set, not the system,” she said.

She added that she enforces better welfare policies within her own team. “My office team works only eight hours, Monday to Friday. We have maternity and paternity policies. I also believe that bringing children to the workplace should be normalised,” she said.

Weeks after her exit from Kalki 2, Deepika also addressed issues related to working conditions and pay gaps. She said these challenges were not new to her. “I have dealt with these issues for a long time. Questions about my fees have always come up. But I fight my battles with peace and dignity. Sometimes these issues become public, though that is not my nature. Still, I have always spoken firmly and respectfully,” she said.

Earlier this year, Deepika was removed from Spirit and Kalki 2. Reports claimed she had placed two key demands — an increase in fees and a strict limit of eight working hours. While the makers held discussions, Deepika reportedly remained firm on her stance, and she was eventually replaced in both projects.
