Deadline for US-Iran Agreement Expires, Irans Spokesperson Rejects Pressure Tactics

Tehran, August 17: The 60-day agreement between the United States and Iran has officially expired. In response, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Ismail Baghaei, stated that any discussions would be futile due to the extensive violations committed by the US.

Iranian media reported that during a press conference on Monday, Baghaei emphasized that the significant breach of the memorandum dated June 18 by the US has prevented any negotiations between Tehran and Washington. Consequently, the discussions surrounding the 60-day deadline have become irrelevant.

According to Iran Wire, Baghaei dismissed claims regarding the 60-day timeframe in the US-Iran memorandum. He asserted, “There is no mention of a 60-day deadline in the memorandum, and the Islamic Republic of Iran does not formulate its policies under pressure, ultimatums, or time constraints.”

Baghaei explained that the memorandum only referenced a 60-day period to facilitate discussions on two main points: relief from sanctions and nuclear issues. If no results are achieved, the timeframe could be extended.

Furthermore, the spokesperson refuted claims of any new mediators being involved between Tehran and Washington. He noted that Pakistan and Qatar continue their mediation efforts. Some European nations have expressed willingness to assist in facilitating talks if both Iran and the US desire it, but this does not imply acceptance of a new mediator.

Baghaei asserted that the primary obstacle between Iran and the US is not the lack of mediators, but rather Washington’s mindset, miscalculations, and reliance on strategies that have previously failed.

Additionally, the Foreign Ministry spokesperson announced that two staff members of the French embassy in Iran have been barred from returning. Referring to statements made by the French Foreign Minister, Baghaei claimed that such concepts violate diplomatic law.

He stated that urging embassy staff to assist Iranian civil society is a clear violation of the Vienna Convention on diplomatic relations. In fact, the French Foreign Minister had referred to these individuals as embassy staff aiding Iranian civil society.
