Miami, April 7: Elly De La Cruz delivered two hits, while Tyler Stephenson hit a home run, as the Cincinnati Reds secured a 2-0 victory against the Miami Marlins on Monday night.
Brandon Williamson (1-1) showcased his skills by allowing just three hits over 6 2/3 innings. After a challenging season opener where he surrendered six runs to Pittsburgh, the 28-year-old left-hander struck out four and issued one walk. He kept the Marlins hitless until Otto López managed a two-out single in the fourth inning.
The Reds, who have now won four consecutive games, started the night tied with San Francisco for the fewest runs scored in the majors, totaling just 26. They had a strong performance over the weekend, scoring nine runs in a three-game sweep against Texas.
Cincinnati’s first run came from Miami native Sal Stewart, who hit a single off Marlins starter Janson Junk in the fourth inning. De La Cruz’s one-out double allowed him to score on Stewart’s line drive up the middle.
Stephenson increased the lead with a leadoff home run in the eighth inning, driving a slider from Junk over the left-field wall for his second home run of the season.
Brock Burke took over for Williamson and struck out Xavier Edwards to close the seventh inning. Anthony Santillan pitched the eighth before Emilio Pagan secured his fourth save of the season.
Agustin Ramirez tripled with two outs in the sixth, but Williamson struck out Jakob Marsee, ending Miami’s only significant threat of the game.
Junk (0-1) pitched a career-high 7 1/3 innings, allowing two runs and seven hits while striking out three and walking one. Edwards went 0 for 3, marking the end of his 12-game hitting streak that began with the final three games of last season.
