Dan Evans Believes Emma Raducanu Can Win Wimbledon Title

Former tennis player Dan Evans expresses confidence in Emma Raducanus potential to win Wimbledon, despite her recent challenges.

New Delhi, October 17 (Daily Kiran) : Emma Raducanu, the British tennis sensation, has the potential to claim the prestigious Wimbledon title, according to former player Dan Evans. Speaking in an interview with The Telegraph, Evans expressed his belief that Raducanu could one day add her name to the list of Wimbledon champions.

The 23-year-old Raducanu made headlines in 2021 when she became the US Open champion as a qualifier. However, injuries have significantly impacted her career, including a stress fracture in her right foot that prevented her from competing at Wimbledon and the US Open, resulting in her fall from the top 100 in world rankings.

Evans is optimistic about Raducanu’s future. He praised her talent, stating, “She is an incredibly talented player who understands her capabilities well. This doesn’t mean she is arrogant; rather, she maintains a positive and calm demeanor in high-pressure situations. She doesn’t let pressure overwhelm her and treats each match as just another game. That’s why I believe she will eventually win Wimbledon.”

In addition to battling injuries, Raducanu has faced scrutiny regarding her commitment to the sport. Evans noted that the 2021 US Open winner is working hard to achieve her goals. He remarked, “There’s no doubt she needs to spend more time with a racket in hand. I’m sure the endorsements put a lot of pressure on her, and there’s a struggle about what she should and shouldn’t do. I haven’t seen her practice much, but I’ve heard she trains very well, often putting in two to three hours of hard work without breaks.”

Meanwhile, Evans reflected on his own retirement from Wimbledon, which he considered underwhelming. He did not receive a wildcard for the singles draw and played his final doubles match on Court 15 rather than the main court. He expressed dissatisfaction with the decision and criticized Leon Smith, the captain of Great Britain’s Davis Cup team and head of men’s tennis at the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA). Evans felt he deserved a more honorable farewell in the twilight of his career.

“My complaint is that the contributions of players who have represented British tennis in the Davis Cup are not taken into account when awarding wildcards. There have been times when I might not have wanted to play Davis Cup, but I did, and later I didn’t even get a wildcard for a Challenger tournament,” he said.

“I believe it reflects a lack of respect, but you can expect that from the Davis Cup captain. When they don’t need you, this is how they treat you. You can imagine that his name won’t be on my Christmas card list this year. I sent him a message after my retirement, and he didn’t even respond.”
