Mumbai, March 18: Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde has received a significant setback from the court. The sessions court has rejected her bail application in the high-profile 2016 teacher assault case, allowing the prosecution to continue against her.
The case is linked to an alleged altercation at an Urdu school in Santa Cruz. Tawde and six others are accused of assaulting two teachers. Reports indicate that the incident stemmed from the transfer of a teacher suffering from cancer. An FIR was lodged against Tawde and her co-accused under relevant sections for assault and related charges. The incident garnered widespread attention due to Tawde’s prominent role in local politics at the time.
In court, Mayor Tawde cited a lack of evidence in her plea for acquittal. However, the prosecution presented witness statements and other solid evidence supporting the allegations. During the hearing on the bail application, Additional Sessions Judge Y.P. Manthkar noted that several eyewitnesses had seen Mayor Tawde at the scene of the incident. The court subsequently denied the bail request, stating, “Other witnesses also saw the applicant Ritu Tawde at the time of the incident.” The judge emphasized that where evidence raises “serious doubts,” the process of framing charges should proceed.
The court’s decision means the trial will continue, and Mayor Tawde may face potential legal repercussions that could impact her political standing amid ongoing municipal administration issues in the city. As of the time of reporting, there has been no immediate response from Tawde or her legal team. Political circles in Maharashtra are closely monitoring the situation.
