Mumbai, March 19: The film industry today often grapples with controversies surrounding bold lyrics and provocative visuals. Recent tracks like Badshah’s “Tattiri” and Nora Fatehi-Sanjay Dutt’s “Sarke Chunar” have faced backlash, leading to their removal from various platforms. However, this is not a new phenomenon. Hindi cinema has a history of songs that sparked significant uproar and faced bans. A notable example is the iconic song from the 1971 blockbuster film “Hare Rama Hare Krishna.”
Yes, we are referring to the song “Dum Maro Dum,” featuring Dev Anand and Zeenat Aman. Upon its release, this track, sung by Asha Bhosle, quickly became embroiled in controversy. Composed by R.D. Burman with lyrics by Anand Bakshi, the song depicted Zeenat Aman in a hippie style, smoking a chillum, which many criticized as glamorizing drug culture. Critics labeled it as an affront to Indian culture and accused it of promoting substance abuse among the youth.
The film “Hare Rama Hare Krishna” aimed to critique the burgeoning hippie culture and drug addiction prevalent in the country at the time. The storyline follows Dev Anand (as Prashant) on a quest to find his sister, who has fully embraced the hippie lifestyle in Kathmandu. She spends her days smoking and lost in a haze, having forgotten her family and true identity. Despite the film’s serious theme, the song became the center of controversy.
Reports indicate that the backlash escalated to the point where All India Radio imposed a ban on the song. Furthermore, during its television broadcast, Doordarshan edited out “Dum Maro Dum” entirely.
Interestingly, Asha Bhosle received the Best Playback Singer (Female) award for this song. Dev Anand intended it to convey an anti-drug message, but the catchy tune and bold visuals gave it a different identity altogether.
