New Delhi, April 21: In today’s fast-paced life, poor lifestyle choices, anger, and stress are leading to an increase in high blood pressure (hypertension). Often, the symptoms are not clearly visible, earning it the title of a “silent killer.” However, adopting a healthier lifestyle and making some changes can significantly help in controlling it.

If you are overweight, consume excessive salt, smoke, drink alcohol, or lack physical activity, your risk of high blood pressure increases. Additionally, chronic stress is a major contributing factor. For many, this issue is also linked to family history.

The initial symptoms of high blood pressure are often mild, such as morning headaches, dizziness, anxiety, rapid heartbeat, or occasional nosebleeds. If these symptoms occur frequently, do not ignore them; get your blood pressure checked immediately.

Yoga and a proper diet can be your greatest allies in managing blood pressure. Yoga not only calms the body but also the mind. Practicing yoga for 20-30 minutes daily can reduce stress and help maintain blood pressure levels. Simple poses like Tadasana, Bhujangasana, Shashankasana, and Shavasana are considered very beneficial. Additionally, pranayama techniques such as Anulom-Vilom, Bhramari, and Sheetali can help calm the mind and stabilize heart rates. The effects of yoga are gradual but long-lasting.

Now, let’s discuss diet. To control blood pressure, the first step is to reduce salt intake, as excessive salt directly raises blood pressure. Avoid fried and oily foods. Include green vegetables and fruits in your meals. Foods like bottle gourd, bitter gourd, cucumber, carrots, and gooseberries are very beneficial. Grains like barley, millet, and wheat are also good options. Additionally, buttermilk and light meals are easier to digest and keep the body feeling light. Drink plenty of water and limit caffeine intake (tea and coffee).

Small lifestyle changes can also make a significant impact. For instance, brisk walking daily, going to bed on time, avoiding late-night activities, and ensuring mental relaxation are essential. Try to set aside some time each day for yourself, meditate, listen to music, or engage in any activity you enjoy.
