New Delhi, April 18: The liver is a vital organ in the body, yet today’s irregular lifestyle is weakening it day by day, along with other organs. Serious issues like Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and liver cancer primarily stem from poor diet, alcohol consumption, drug use, sedentary lifestyle, and lack of exercise.
Every year on April 19, World Liver Day is celebrated to raise awareness about this crucial organ. Health experts and various organizations urge the public to recognize liver diseases and adopt a healthier lifestyle.
Understanding the importance of the liver is essential for maintaining its health. The liver filters blood, aids in digestion, stores energy, and helps maintain balance throughout the body. It has the highest regenerative capacity among all organs.
Experts indicate that nearly one-third of the global population suffers from Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD). This condition is often linked to obesity, poor diet, and unhealthy lifestyle choices. Initially asymptomatic, it can lead to fat accumulation in the liver, resulting in fibrosis, cirrhosis, and even liver cancer over time.
The theme for World Liver Day 2026 is “Good Habits, Healthy Liver,” focusing on four key practices to keep the liver healthy: balanced diet, staying active, reducing alcohol intake, and regular check-ups.
Adopt a Balanced Diet: The liver requires good nutrition. Aim to consume 2-3 fruits, green vegetables, whole grains, low-fat protein, and healthy fats daily. Avoid processed foods, junk food, excessive sugar, and unhealthy fats. Experts affirm that “food is medicine,” a principle that remains true today.
Stay Active and Exercise: Regular physical activity prevents fat accumulation in the liver. Whether through daily workouts, cycling, swimming, dancing, or any form of exercise, staying active strengthens the liver.
Reduce Alcohol Consumption: Alcohol is particularly harmful to the liver. Cutting down or completely eliminating alcohol is the most effective way to prevent liver diseases.
Schedule Regular Check-Ups: Regular health screenings are essential for detecting liver issues before symptoms appear. Individuals with diabetes, obesity, or a family history of liver disease should consult their doctor for liver function tests and vitamin E checks.
Health experts believe that small lifestyle changes, such as drinking enough water, getting quality sleep, eating a balanced diet, and incorporating regular exercise, can significantly contribute to liver health.
