Congress Welcomes Supreme Court Stay on New UGC Rules

New Delhi: The Supreme Court’s decision to stay the implementation of the University Grants Commission’s (UGC) new regulations aimed at promoting equality in higher education institutions has drawn varied responses from political parties. Congress welcomed the court’s order, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) stated that it respects the Supreme Court’s judgment and will act accordingly.

Speaking to the press, Congress Uttar Pradesh President Ajay Rai expressed gratitude towards the Supreme Court and accused the BJP-led government of divisive politics. He said, “I want to thank the Supreme Court. The BJP government has indulged in politics that divides society. Initially, it created a rift between Hindus and Muslims, and now it is further dividing Hindus into forward, backward, and Dalit groups. The Supreme Court’s decision deserves applause.”

Congress MP Pramod Tiwari also welcomed the judiciary’s intervention but criticised the central government for fomenting social tensions. He stated, “The Supreme Court has delivered its verdict, and I welcome it. However, it is the government’s duty to maintain peace among people and communities and prevent conflicts. Instead, the government is stirring caste and religious disputes and diverting attention from real issues.”

Rashtriya Loktantrik Party (RLP) chief and MP Hanuman Beniwal called on the government to clarify its stance on the matter. He remarked, “It is not as if the government was unaware before. Governments do not act carelessly or issue orders while sleeping. The government must defend its position in the Supreme Court and should not backtrack. Whether the government maintains or changes its stance will become clear in court. But if it withdraws, it will be seen as an attempt to divide the public.”

Samajwadi Party MP Pushpendra Saroj emphasised strict adherence to constitutional provisions. He said, “All constitutional articles must be carefully read and followed correctly. Amendments should be made only when necessary. The Constitution already contains strong anti-discrimination provisions, which need in-depth study and sincere implementation.”

The Supreme Court’s stay on the UGC regulations has sparked a significant debate on social cohesion and government policies in education, reflecting diverse political perspectives.
