Chennai, March 9: K. Selva Perunthagai, the president of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee, announced on Sunday that the Congress party will lead the opposition alliance in Puducherry. Meanwhile, the DMK will continue to head the alliance in Tamil Nadu.
Speaking to reporters after a consultation meeting with senior party leaders at the Congress headquarters in Chennai, Selva Perunthagai stated, “Congress has always been the leading political force in Puducherry, while the DMK is the dominant party in Tamil Nadu.”
This meeting was convened as political parties ramp up preparations ahead of the assembly elections in five states: Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala, West Bengal, and Assam. The election dates are expected to be announced in the coming days.
Selva Perunthagai also mentioned that under the seat-sharing arrangement within the DMK-led alliance, Congress will contest elections for 28 assembly seats in Tamil Nadu.
He added, “We will contest in 28 assembly constituencies. In areas where we are not contesting, we will work diligently for the victory of our alliance partners.”
The consultation meeting included senior Congress leaders such as party observer Mukul Wasnik and senior in-charge Girish Chodankar. The discussions focused on election preparations and coordination between the Congress units in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
After the meeting, Mukul Wasnik expressed strong confidence in the alliance’s prospects in the upcoming elections. He stated, “We are fully confident of our success in the forthcoming assembly elections. Senior officials from both Tamil Nadu and Puducherry shared their thoughts and suggestions during the meeting, and we have taken them into consideration.”
When reporters inquired why Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had not publicly expressed happiness after finalizing the alliance agreement with the DMK, Selva Perunthagai responded that there was no reason to doubt Rahul Gandhi’s satisfaction with the DMK-led alliance in Tamil Nadu.
He remarked, “Rahul Gandhi will certainly be happy after the alliance is formed, but it is not necessary for him to express it publicly.”
Senior Congress leader Girish Chodankar also highlighted the party’s organizational strength at the grassroots level. He noted, “Congress has a robust network of booth committee members across the state, and they will play a crucial role in ensuring the alliance’s victory in the upcoming elections.”
The seat-sharing negotiations between the DMK and Congress for the Tamil Nadu assembly elections have been completed, with Congress allocated 28 assembly seats and one Rajya Sabha seat.
As election preparations continue, discussions regarding seat-sharing arrangements in Puducherry are also ongoing.
