Mumbai, February 26: The controversy surrounding a viral video of Muslim employees praying at the Municipal Electricity Department office in Malegaon, Maharashtra, continues to escalate. Congress spokesperson Manish Dubey responded to the incident on Wednesday, labeling it unconstitutional.
Dubey stated, “If prayers are being conducted somewhere, it is crucial to understand why. According to the Constitution, praying in a constitutional space is wrong, regardless of who is doing it. Did those who prayed seek permission for it?”
He emphasized, “No religious activity can take place in a constitutional space. Such spaces are meant to be neutral for everyone. Today, someone is praying; tomorrow, a Hindu might say they want to perform aarti, and then a Christian might come to pray. This would undermine the very essence of constitutional spaces. I condemn this act and it is important to understand why it happened.”
Dubey also criticized BJP leader Kirit Somaiya for demanding the resignation of the employees involved, stating, “Kirit Somaiya writes letters about everything. He seems to have no other work. This is a matter for the administration to investigate. After the inquiry, the administration will make decisions based on what they deem appropriate, considering public sentiments.”
He remarked on Swami Avimukteshwaranand, describing him as a figure with a distinct ideology. “He is working to promote the idea of declaring the cow as a national mother. Gaining popularity by presenting the right ideas is challenging. I believe his rising popularity is causing concern for some. There seems to be a conspiracy to trap him due to some underlying biases.”
Dubey raised a significant concern, stating, “If revered figures like Rishis and Shankaracharyas are not safe, what will happen to the common people? This raises serious questions. The government should decide on the matter, as there seems to be an attempt to tarnish the reputation of such personalities through false cases. I believe the consequences will not be favorable.”
