New Delhi, March 22: The Congress party announced its fifth list of candidates for the Assam Assembly elections on Sunday. This list includes candidates for seven constituencies.
According to an official statement from the party’s Central Election Committee, candidates have been declared for constituencies such as Gosai Gaon, Dootma (ST), Bihpuria, Bhergaon, Majbat, Haflong (ST), and Katigora.
The approval of this list reflects Congress’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its electoral presence ahead of the crucial 2026 elections. Notable candidates include Joseph Hasda, who will contest from Gosai Gaon, and Birkhang Boro, who is set to run from Dootma (ST).
Rajat Kanti Saha has been nominated from Bihpuria, while Anchula Gawra Daimari will represent the party from Bhergaon. Narayan Adhikari has been chosen as the candidate from Majbat, and Nirmal Langthasa will contest from the reserved Haflong (ST) seat. Amar Chand Jain has been selected as the candidate for Katigora.
This announcement was formalized through a press release signed by AICC General Secretary K.C. Venugopal, indicating that these selections were made after careful deliberation by the party’s central leadership.
With this list, Congress continues to gradually unveil its candidates for the Assam elections, signaling its intent to pose a serious challenge to the ruling BJP-led alliance. Party insiders noted that the selection process focused on balancing experience, grassroots engagement, and community representation, especially in constituencies with significant tribal and minority populations.
The Assam Assembly elections are expected to feature a multi-cornered contest, with regional parties and alliances playing a crucial role. Congress is likely to announce more candidates in the coming days as it finalizes seat-sharing arrangements and electoral strategies.
It is important to note that the elections for the 126-member Assam Assembly are scheduled for April 9, with the counting of votes set for May 4.
