Mumbai, April 18: Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhu Singh Sukhu recently discussed the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections in 2026. He expressed confidence in the party’s performance.
During the conversation, CM Sukhu stated, “For the first time in 20 years, Congress is fielding ideology-based candidates for all 294 seats. Our presence in Bengal has been weak for the last 50 years, but this time, we are entering the fray with full strength.”
He emphasized, “Congress is the main opposition party against the BJP in the country. The people of Bengal must realize that the only force capable of stopping the BJP is Congress. TMC and BJP are two sides of the same coin. Rahul Gandhi is correct. While they fight in their states, it is Rahul Gandhi and the Congress party who are the ones to stop the BJP in Delhi. The people of West Bengal should support Congress to halt the BJP.”
The Chief Minister praised Congress’s strategy of selecting all 294 candidates based on ideology. He noted that the people of Bengal will now decide whether to vote for Congress, which is fighting against the BJP on a national level.
Sukhu also took a clear stance on electoral issues, stating that no one should monopolize basic rights like food and water. He remarked, “People in India live with democracy and freedom. During elections, some exploit these issues for political gain, which is not right. The real issues should be how much employment has been created in the state, how much development has occurred, and how to advance the state in the future.”
He stressed that incidents like Special Investigation Reports (SIR) should not occur before elections. Sukhu mentioned that he could elaborate on his state of Himachal Pradesh in the future, but for now, the focus is on the Bengal elections.
Congress has refused to enter any alliances for the 2026 West Bengal elections and is contesting all 294 seats independently. The first phase of voting is scheduled for April 23, with the second phase on April 29, and the counting of votes will take place on May 4.
