Bengaluru, May 20: Senior BJP leader and opposition head R. Ashok accused the Congress government of deliberately postponing the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) elections out of fear of losing. He described this action as a betrayal of the people of Bengaluru.
During a press conference, Ashok stated that if elections were held based on the previous 198 wards, the process would have been completed by now. However, following the decision to divide Bengaluru into five administrative zones, Congress’s internal surveys reportedly indicated losses in all five areas, prompting the government to delay the elections.
Ashok further claimed that Bengaluru’s in-charge minister and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar did not want elections to take place before the leadership transition regarding the Chief Minister position within the Congress party was finalized.
He alleged that internal strife within Congress has led to garbage piling up across Bengaluru and stalled development projects. According to Ashok, the Congress government is directly responsible for this situation.
Noting that the court has set another deadline for holding elections, Ashok urged the government to announce elections immediately, asserting that the BJP is fully prepared for the electoral process.
The BJP leader accused Congress of blaming opposition parties for the delays after their internal surveys predicted losses. He mentioned that the BJP had already written to the Election Commission, demanding immediate elections.
He questioned why Congress is postponing elections if they are confident of victory, stating that blaming the opposition for every issue has become a habit of the ruling party. Ashok criticized the government for using surveys and SIR exercises as excuses to delay the elections.
