Congress Condemns US Action in Venezuela, Calls It Violation of International Law

New Delhi: Congress has expressed serious concern over the recent US actions in Venezuela, describing the operation involving the arrest of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife as a breach of international law.

Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh, in a post on social media platform X on Sunday, stated, “Congress is deeply concerned about the US actions related to Venezuela in the past 24 hours. The established principles of international law cannot be unilaterally violated.”

The party’s response aligns with the protests held by left-wing parties at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on Sunday against the US move in Venezuela.

The CPI(M) leadership condemned the US action, calling it “imperialist military aggression” and urged the central government to adopt a clear and firm stance against it. Protesters accused the US of attacking Venezuela to seize control over its oil resources.

The incident follows US President Donald Trump’s announcement of a large-scale military strike by American forces on Caracas, Venezuela’s capital, and the arrest of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife. Trump also declared that the governance of the South American country during its transition period would be in US hands.

Meanwhile, Maduro arrived in New York City late Saturday local time, where he faces criminal charges in the United States. Federal prosecutors have released a comprehensive indictment accusing him of leading a long-standing drug-related terrorism and cocaine trafficking conspiracy.

India described the recent developments in Venezuela as a “matter of concern” on Sunday and called on all parties involved to resolve issues peacefully through dialogue to ensure peace and stability in the region.
