New Delhi, March 21: The dates for the Kerala Assembly elections have been announced, and Congress has revealed its list of 92 candidates. However, concerns regarding ticket distribution have emerged. Senior Congress leader Rashid Alvi addressed these issues, stating that tickets have been awarded to winning candidates and women.
In a conversation in New Delhi, Alvi emphasized that the critical question is not who received tickets, but rather that the party has chosen candidates likely to win. He noted the importance of this decision in the current political landscape. Congress believes it is essential to nominate candidates who can defeat the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and leftist parties in Kerala.
Alvi also mentioned that after 2029, women will be granted reservations according to the Constitution, and at that time, political parties will be responsible for allocating one-third of tickets to women.
Regarding the allocation of only nine tickets to women candidates in the Kerala Assembly elections, Alvi pointed out that Sonia Gandhi has been the sole female leader of Congress for a long time. He reaffirmed that Sonia Gandhi remains the leader of the parliamentary party, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is among the party’s most significant leaders. He argued that it would be incorrect to claim that Congress does not respect women, as the party does award tickets to winning female candidates.
It is noteworthy that Congress released its final list of candidates for the Kerala Assembly elections on Thursday. The party plans to contest 95 seats, with 92 candidates named in the current list. Congress spokesperson Shama Mohammad expressed concern over the low representation of women in the ticket allocation. She highlighted that only nine out of 92 tickets were awarded to women.
Shama Mohammad took to social media platform X to express her frustration and appealed to Rahul Gandhi for assistance. She wrote, “We have been denied, but we have not lost. I urge our leader Rahul Gandhi to support women in the Kerala Congress. Only nine out of 92 tickets have been given to women. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, only one woman was nominated out of 16 tickets. Even if a woman is talented, the situation remains dire. This is very disappointing.”
