Congress Accuses Modi Government of Delaying Womens Reservation Implementation

New Delhi, April 21: The Congress party has accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the central government of delaying the implementation of women’s reservation. Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh stated that Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi have previously written to the Prime Minister, urging for the immediate enactment of women’s reservation. Despite these efforts, the government has yet to take action.

Jairam Ramesh shared a letter from Sonia Gandhi on the social media platform X, dated September 20, 2017. He noted, “As the then Congress President, Sonia Gandhi wrote to Prime Minister Modi regarding the passage of the women’s reservation bill. The Congress party’s stance on this issue has always been firm and consistent. It is the Modi government that has ignored this demand and attempted to delay it by linking it to the delimitation process.”

In another post, Ramesh highlighted that Rahul Gandhi, as Congress President, wrote to the Prime Minister on July 16, 2018, demanding the immediate implementation of women’s reservation. He pointed out that no steps have been taken since then. “Eight years later, the Prime Minister still wants to delay the implementation by linking it to delimitation,” he added.

Political rhetoric surrounding women’s reservation has intensified, with opposition parties continuously questioning the central government. In this context, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut remarked that a protest is being organized because the delimitation bill has not been approved. He noted that the women’s reservation bill was passed in 2023, signed by the President, and the BJP has begun implementing it through an ordinance. “Which women’s reservation bill is being protested?” he asked.

Raut further stated that Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis should first listen to the Lok Sabha debate. He insisted that the Chief Minister should bring someone of equal stature for the debate, suggesting that the Prime Minister should be invited.

Meanwhile, NCP (SP) leader Supriya Sule, speaking to reporters in Pune, asserted that the BJP is aware that the bill was passed in 2023. “We passed this bill two and a half years ago, but it is not being implemented,” she stated.
