Bengaluru, April 21: A special court in Bengaluru has ordered the filing of an FIR against Karnataka’s Home Minister G. Parameshwara. This decision comes in response to allegations of a ₹500 betting incident during a kabaddi tournament.
The court took this matter seriously, recognizing its potential impact on society. It directed the Kodigehalli police in Tumakuru to register the FIR and conduct a thorough investigation. This is seen as a significant setback for Home Minister G. Parameshwara.
The order followed a private complaint filed by H.R. Nagabhushan, who argued that even a small wager accepted publicly by someone in a constitutional position promotes illegal activities.
Acting on the complaint, Judge K.N. Shivakumar of the special court for legislative and parliamentary matters instructed the police to file the case and initiate a detailed inquiry.
The incident occurred during a state-level pre-university college kabaddi tournament recently held in Tumakuru. During the event, G. Parameshwara placed a light-hearted bet of ₹500 with District Collector Shubha Kalyan, predicting that the Vijapura team would win. However, the Mangaluru team defeated Vijapura with a score of 36-26.
At the awards ceremony, the minister himself disclosed that he lost the bet. This statement became the basis for the complaint.
Although the amount was relatively small and presented in a joking manner, the complainant argued that betting is illegal under the law and that public officials should refrain from such activities.
Officials stated that the investigation will proceed as per the court’s directives. The police will now register the FIR and conduct their inquiry. This could pose a legal challenge for Home Minister G. Parameshwara.
