New Delhi, April 21: The national president of the Congress party, Mallikarjun Kharge, faced backlash after making controversial remarks aimed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a press briefing in Chennai on Tuesday. Kharge’s comments crossed the line of decorum, leading to widespread criticism and potential legal troubles for the Congress leader.
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju condemned Kharge’s statements, which included calling the Prime Minister a “terrorist.” Rijiju announced that a formal complaint had been filed against Kharge. In a post on the social media platform X, he stated, “We have lodged a strong complaint against Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge for his shocking and disgraceful remarks.”
Rijiju emphasized that such comments are not only disrespectful but also constitute a dangerous and unprecedented attack on democratic institutions. He called for immediate action, insisting that there would be no compromise on this matter.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has formally written to the Election Commission of India, demanding legal action against Kharge for his remarks.
Earlier, Union Home Minister Amit Shah also criticized Kharge’s statements. In a post on X, Shah remarked, “Every day, the Congress party shows a new decline in its behavior, breaking records in lowering the level of public discourse. Today, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has violated every standard of public conduct by labeling our elected Prime Minister a ‘terrorist,’ bringing shame to the nation.”
He further stated that calling a leader like Prime Minister Modi, who has effectively eradicated terrorism over the past 12 years, a “terrorist” is utterly condemnable. Shah asserted that whenever Congress hurls insults at PM Modi, the people of India respond, and this time will be no different.
