Communal Tension in Tarana, Madhya Pradesh: Curfew Imposed, 20 Arrested

Ujjain, 23 January – In Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain district, communal tension erupted in the town of Tarana following a dispute on Thursday night. So far, 20 individuals have been arrested, police superintendent Pradeep Sharma informed on Friday.

Superintendent Sharma stated that a strong police presence has been deployed to maintain peace in Tarana. Continuous flag marches and patrols by police vehicles are underway. Considering the situation, the district administration has imposed curfew and invoked Section 163 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

He added, “Twenty people have been identified and arrested till now. Police are engaging with representatives from both communities. The situation is currently under control, but security has been intensified to prevent any untoward incidents.”

Police officials revealed that some individuals attempted to disturb the atmosphere by spreading rumours. These persons are being closely monitored, and CCTV footage is being examined to identify troublemakers. Loudspeaker announcements in colonies urge residents not to pay attention to rumours. Traffic in affected areas has also been restored.

According to reports, the trouble began on Thursday night after a minor dispute escalated into alleged assault on two persons, one reportedly linked to a Hindu organisation. Unknown assailants attacked a promoter of the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) and his companion, seriously injuring them. Both were referred to Ujjain for medical treatment.

On Friday, in protest, individuals associated with right-wing groups raised religious slogans and vandalised nearly a dozen buses at the bus stand. At least six people sustained injuries during this unrest.

Following Friday’s congregational prayers (Namaz), the situation worsened again. It is alleged that the crowd set fire to two buses, damaged shops, and engaged in stone-pelting at multiple locations. Police arrived promptly and restored order.

Superintendent Sharma confirmed that attempts to murder charges have been filed against six accused in connection with the incident. He appealed to the public to maintain peace and assured strict action against the culprits.

Police reported that the incident is linked to an attack on a youth named Sohel Thakur, who was assaulted from behind by several youths. He sustained serious head injuries and was referred to a hospital in Ujjain. A case has been registered against Sappan Mirza, Ishan Mirza, Shadab alias Idli, Salman Mirza, Rizwan Mirza, and Naveed. Five of them have been arrested while others are under interrogation. The victim’s condition is reported to be stable.

Due to the tension, markets in Tarana remained closed on Friday, and heavy police deployment was maintained in sensitive areas. Authorities continue to urge citizens to uphold peace and harmony.
