Collision of Two Trams in Moscow Injures 22, Including Five Children

Moscow, March 15: A significant accident occurred in the Russian capital, Moscow, on Sunday morning when two trams collided. According to the city’s traffic police, the incident was caused by a technical failure that led one tram to derail. Reports indicate that 22 individuals were injured, including five children.

The collision took place on Vodnikov Street. Following the incident, the road leading to the city center was closed, and officials were dispatched to the scene.

As reported by the Xinhua news agency, the two trams collided on a backup section of the Volokolamsk Highway. One of the “Vityaz-M” trams derailed while exiting an overpass due to a technical malfunction, subsequently colliding with an oncoming car.

According to the Moscow State Traffic Inspectorate, a total of 22 people were injured in the accident, which included five children. One driver was trapped in the cabin and was rescued by emergency personnel.

Dmitry Bochkow, a representative of the Moscow Metro, stated that all injured individuals are receiving necessary medical assistance. He also noted that the tram was operated by a seasoned driver with 23 years of experience.

Both drivers had completed mandatory pre-trip inspections before the journey. A special commission has been established to investigate the causes of the accident.

The Vityaz-M tram (model 71-931M) is a three-section low-floor tram manufactured by PK Transport Systems. This model was introduced on Moscow’s route number 17 in 2017.

The tram is equipped with six electric motors with a total capacity of 432 kilowatts, allowing it to reach speeds of 40 km/h in just 14 seconds. In case of an electrical supply interruption, the tram can operate on battery power for up to 1500 meters.

This tram can navigate curves with a minimum radius of 14 meters. According to regional administration reports, a similar incident occurred in August 2025 when a bus carrying tourists collided with a freight train at a railway crossing in the Leningrad region, resulting in one fatality and 16 injuries.

The TASS news agency, citing the regional administration’s press service, reported that the health committee of the Leningrad region confirmed the death of one person and injuries to 16 passengers on the bus.
