ATLANTA — The second year of the 12-team College Football Playoff has brought a fresh challenge as it now overlaps with the NCAA’s transfer portal window.
Starting this season, the NCAA consolidated transfer opportunities into a single 15-day window from January 2 to January 16. This change means players and coaches have just over two weeks to manage transfers and prepare for the next season.
With four head coaches, eight coordinators, and more than 400 players competing for a national championship, the timing complicates matters. Oregon’s head coach Dan Lanning and Indiana’s Curt Cignetti face the difficult task of balancing their teams’ playoff ambitions with recruiting top talent through the portal.
Both teams last played on January 1: Indiana secured a victory against Alabama in the Rose Bowl, while Oregon defeated Texas Tech in the Orange Bowl. The transfer portal opened at midnight immediately after, even before the teams returned to their campuses.
Managing Dual Priorities Amid Playoff Intensity
Coach Lanning described the situation as a “juggle,” explaining that communicating with recruits is challenging when the focus remains on high-stakes games. “We want recruits to understand that while we wish we could give them more attention, our priority right now is this game,” he said.
Similarly, Cignetti spoke about playing catch-up during the week before the Peach Bowl. He acknowledged relying heavily on his staff to manage evaluations and official visits efficiently despite the stress and limited time.
Coordinators Handling Transfer Portals and Future Roles
Oregon’s offensive coordinator Will Stein and defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi are managing transfer activities for both Oregon and their next programs, as both prepare to move on to head coaching positions at Kentucky and Cal Berkeley respectively after the playoffs.
Despite exhaustion, Stein and Lupoi remain committed to their current responsibilities. Lupoi expressed the difficulty of dividing attention but affirmed his dedication to preparing Oregon’s team thoroughly. Stein emphasized that continued success at Oregon will help attract talent for his future program.
Looking Ahead: Extended Transfer Window and Playoff Stakes
If Oregon advances to the national title game, players will benefit from an extended transfer window from January 20 to 24. However, the NCAA has removed the previous 15-day spring transfer window, making this period crucial for player movement.
Stein noted that those who manage the chaos of the overlapping playoff and transfer schedules best are the ones who thrive. “It’s not easy for anyone, but it’s part of the job, and we’re fortunate to be in this position,” he said, reflecting on the intense but rewarding nature of college football coaching.
