Varanasi, September 5 (Daily Kiran) : Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath visited Varanasi on Saturday, where he accused the Samajwadi Party (SP) of misappropriating flood relief funds prior to 2017. His remarks came during a distribution of relief materials to those affected by recent flooding in the region.
While surveying the impacted areas from the air, Adityanath addressed a gathering, stating, “The relief materials we are distributing today were not available before 2017. Back then, only dry bread was provided; there were no hot meals, rations, milk, or dignity kits.”
He emphasized that the funds sent by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from the disaster relief fund are being utilized effectively for relief efforts. Adityanath alleged that these funds were previously siphoned off by the SP. “They consumed the money meant for the poor,” he claimed, adding that assessments are underway for farmers whose crops have been damaged by the floods, ensuring they receive appropriate compensation.
The Chief Minister also discussed the various relief measures being implemented, which include addressing issues arising from stagnant floodwater, such as pests and hazardous creatures, as well as structural collapses and incidents of lightning strikes. He announced that families affected by drowning or lightning would receive ₹4 lakh in assistance within 24 hours.
Furthermore, he assured that any poor family whose home is destroyed or submerged would be granted housing under the Prime Minister’s or Chief Minister’s housing schemes.
Adityanath criticized the previous SP government, asserting that effective governance leads to beneficial schemes and curtails corruption while ensuring the rights of the poor without discrimination.
“I have come here to assess the situation in the district as per Prime Minister Modi‘s directives,” he stated. The Chief Minister also noted that relief camps have been established for displaced individuals, and teams from the NDRF, PAC, and Water Police are deployed around the clock with 48 boats to assist in the affected areas. Additionally, medical camps are being set up for those falling ill due to the flood situation.
