New Delhi, July 28: The spokesperson for the Cockroach People’s Party (CJP), Sourav Das, has raised concerns regarding the Supreme Court‘s interim order. In a statement, he emphasized that the court’s ruling on public interest petitions related to protests should alarm the entire nation. He specifically pointed out the fourth directive of the order, which allows governments to proceed with existing FIRs and continue investigations, raising serious questions.
Sourav Das claimed on the social media platform ‘X’ that this directive contradicts the assurance given by the Indian government to the youth, which included withdrawing FIRs against peaceful protesters and refraining from any action. He noted that it was based on this assurance and dialogue that the CJP had called off its nationwide protests.
The CJP spokesperson accused the central government and BJP-led state governments of potentially using the Supreme Court’s interim order to continue cases against protesters. He expressed ongoing concern that peaceful demonstrations could be targeted for political purposes.
He also questioned why government lawyers did not oppose this interim order, especially when discussions between the central government and CJP were ongoing, and there was an agreement to end the protests. Sourav Das stated that the order, issued without this background information, is unacceptable to them.
He emphasized that the public trust given to thousands of students and youth should not be undermined through subsequent legal processes. He warned that this could affect the public’s faith in institutions. However, he acknowledged that the interim order does not prevent the central or state governments from withdrawing FIRs or refraining from action against peaceful protesters.
He cited examples from Bihar and Assam, where some states have already taken steps to withdraw such cases. He demanded that the central government and the relevant BJP-NDA-led state governments maintain a record of promises made to protesters during the Supreme Court proceedings to ensure full transparency.
Sourav Das urged that constitutional institutions should not be politically exploited and that governments must honor their public commitments. He appealed to the central government to fulfill its promise of withdrawing FIRs and not taking action against future protesters.
He warned that if the government fails to meet its commitments, the CJP would have no choice but to restart a nationwide movement in support of students and young protesters. He stressed that the voices of youth cannot be ignored and that honoring promises is essential for a democratic system.
