Beijing, February 16: According to network platform data, the total box office earnings for films during the 2026 Chinese New Year have exceeded 500 million yuan.

The Chinese New Year film season began on February 15 and will continue until the seventh day of the new lunar year, as per the Chinese lunar calendar. This year, a variety of genres, including comedy, action, animation, and science fiction, are being showcased, offering audiences a vibrant cinematic experience.

The “Film+” concept will be widely promoted this year, focusing on exploring new business models and enhancing consumption. On February 12, China’s National Film Administration and other departments launched the “2026 Film Economy Promotion Year,” which will provide at least 120 million yuan in film viewing subsidies throughout the year.

The financial sector has also joined this initiative, with China UnionPay collaborating with banks and theater chains to offer multi-coupon discounts, making movie-going more affordable and payment more convenient for the public.

This year’s Chinese New Year film box office is somewhat different from previous years, especially in the first 16 “Film+” integrated testing cities, where numerous innovations in consumption are being observed.

There is a high demand for film-related merchandise, such as intangible cultural heritage crafts and themed blind boxes. According to a vendor, sales of film-related products have nearly doubled compared to the same period last year, even before the official start of the Spring Festival Film Festival.
