Tel Aviv, April 22: After years of mediation by the United States, discussions between Lebanon and Israel are finally taking place. The first round of talks was held in the presence of U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and now the second round is set to occur.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar stated that there are no significant disagreements between Beirut and Jerusalem ahead of the upcoming talks in Washington on Thursday.
At a reception for the foreign diplomatic corps in Jerusalem, Saar remarked, “We have made a historic decision to engage in direct talks with Lebanon after more than 40 years.”
He added, “Unfortunately, Lebanon is a failed state, effectively under the control of Iran through Hezbollah. However, this also means that Hezbollah is a common enemy of both Israel and Lebanon. It poses a threat to Israel’s security and undermines Lebanon’s freedom and future.”
Saar emphasized that there are no serious disputes between Israel and Lebanon, only minor border issues that can be resolved. He noted that the only obstacle to peace and normalization between the two countries is Hezbollah.
Before the next round of talks, he urged the Lebanese government to collaborate against the “terrorist regime that Hezbollah has established in your area.” He stated, “This cooperation is needed more by you than by us. It requires clear moral thinking and the courage to take risks. However, there is no real alternative to ensure a peaceful future for both of us. For you, Lebanon, it means sovereignty, freedom, and liberation from Iranian control.”
It is noteworthy that this marks the first official talks between Lebanon and Israel in nearly 34 years.
