
Beijing, August 7: On August 6, Sun Lei, the acting head of the Chinese permanent mission to the United Nations, highlighted the necessity of maintaining stability in South Sudan during a Security Council review on the issue.
Sun Lei stated that general elections are set to take place in South Sudan by the end of this year, marking a crucial phase in the country’s transitional process. He emphasized that maintaining national stability is a fundamental requirement. China calls on all parties to remain calm, exercise restraint, avoid the use of force, and prevent the situation from deteriorating.
China supports the South Sudan government and the United Nations mission in South Sudan to continue promoting inter-ethnic dialogue, implement more confidence-building measures, and foster harmonious coexistence, unity, and mutual assistance among the people.
Sun Lei also noted that South Sudan recently celebrated its 15th independence anniversary. China extends heartfelt congratulations on the achievements in the peace process, nation-building, and economic development in South Sudan. As a close friend of South Sudan, China is prepared to work with the international community to firmly support the government’s and people’s efforts towards national reconciliation and lasting peace, while continuing to play a constructive role in this regard.
