Beijing, February 25: According to the latest data from the Chinese National Forestry and Grassland Administration, China’s total forest area has reached 3.614 billion mu. During the 14th Five-Year Plan period, China has achieved afforestation over an area of 185 million mu, equivalent to the size of Fujian province, making it the fastest-growing country in terms of green area globally.

Research findings released in 2025 by a team led by Qu Qinghua from Peking University indicate that by 2020, China had approximately 142.6 billion trees, averaging 100 trees per person. The team utilized a combination of drones, LiDAR, and algorithmic models to count trees across more than 76,000 sample plots, completing the first estimate of the country’s tree population.

The goal of “100 trees per person” embodies China’s “green assets” and makes the “green accounts” of its citizens visible and accessible. This initiative has resulted in both preserved and newly planted trees.

Since 2012, China has afforested over 1.1 billion mu (approximately 73.3 million hectares), contributing nearly 25% to the world’s newly created green area. According to the Global Forest Resource Assessment Report 2025 released by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, China is expected to see an average annual increase of 1.69 million hectares of forest area between 2015 and 2025, making it the country with the highest average annual net growth.
