Beijing, April 14: China has labeled the United States’ alleged blockade of Iranian ports as “dangerous and irresponsible.” During a press conference, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated that this action by the US is likely to escalate tensions and confrontations in the region.
He emphasized that the US has intensified military activities to impose a targeted blockade, which could adversely affect the already fragile ceasefire agreements in place.
China also warned that this move could jeopardize the safety of vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
When asked about Trump’s statements regarding additional tariffs, Guo responded that if the US persists in imposing extra tariffs on China under the guise of “military product exports,” China will take strong countermeasures.
In response to reports about the US military’s plans to establish a new fuel depot in Davao, Philippines, Guo remarked that in a world currently facing upheaval and change, unilateral actions and military bullying could lead to global troubles. He noted that the current state of development and stability in the Asia-Pacific region has not been easily achieved and should not be disrupted at any cost.
Amid the alleged US blockade concerning Hormuz, the situation in the Middle East has raised global concerns. Trump has stated that he will block all ships passing through this area. According to the US Central Command, the USS Tripoli (LHA-7) is involved in this operation, with F-35B Lightning II stealth fighter jets, MV-22 Osprey aircraft, and helicopters continuously being deployed towards Hormuz. CENTCOM has indicated that more fighter jets can be stationed on the USS Tripoli.
In light of these developments, Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khalid bin Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan at Beijing’s Great Hall of the People on Tuesday. They discussed a four-point peace proposal and emphasized the need for a shared, comprehensive, and sustainable security framework for the Middle East and Gulf region.
During a meeting with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, Xi criticized the increasing US interference, stating that the “law of the jungle” is returning to the world, and called for enhanced cooperation against it. Sanchez is also on an official visit to China.
