Beijing, April 18: A ten-day ceasefire has been established between Lebanon and Israel. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun stated that the focus should now shift towards achieving a permanent agreement. Meanwhile, China has welcomed this ceasefire between the two nations.
A spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry remarked on the ten-day ceasefire, saying, “China welcomes all efforts to end the fighting. We hope that both parties will maintain the momentum of the ceasefire and dialogue, resolving disputes through political and diplomatic means, which is a responsible approach.”
U.S. President Donald Trump expressed his excitement about the upcoming trip to China on Truth Social, stating, “President Xi Jinping is very pleased that the Strait of Hormuz is open.”
In April, Trump was scheduled to visit China; however, due to escalating tensions with Iran, the trip has been postponed to May. He has conveyed his enthusiasm regarding this visit.
Regarding the trip, Trump noted, “Our meeting in China will be special and perhaps historic. I look forward to being with President Xi; we will achieve a lot!”
Media reports suggest that Trump’s visit to China is now set for May 14 and 15. Trump has previously acknowledged China’s role in bringing Iran to the negotiating table, while Iran has thanked its allies, China and Russia, for their contributions.
However, China has been hesitant to respond to Iran’s appeal for it to act as a security guarantor in the region.
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun stated that Lebanon is entering a new phase, focusing on negotiating a permanent agreement to safeguard the rights of its people, the unity of its territory, and the sovereignty of the nation.
Addressing the Lebanese people, President Aoun emphasized that the country is moving beyond efforts to implement the ceasefire and is progressing towards a significant stage of maintaining long-term stability. He expressed confidence that, like previous efforts, these initiatives would help save Lebanon.
Aoun clarified that engaging in dialogue is not a sign of weakness or retreat but a sovereign decision aimed at protecting Lebanon’s interests, preventing loss of life, and ending displacement.
Reflecting on the heavy toll of the conflict, President Aoun noted that thousands of Lebanese have lost their lives and pledged that no more lives should be lost for foreign interests or political calculations. He stated, “I am prepared to take full responsibility for these decisions.”
