New Delhi, April 20: Madagascar is once again engulfed in turmoil following the recent arrests of four young activists. These detentions have compelled the nation’s youth to take to the streets in protest.
The recent arrests have triggered a wave of anger among the youth, who are demanding accountability from the military government that came to power after widespread protests last year.
On April 12, four activists—Herizo Andriamanantena, Miora Rakotomalala, Dina Randrianarisoa, and Nomena Ratsihorimanana—were arrested. They participated in a demonstration on April 10, where they called for the government to announce election dates.
The activists face serious charges, including “undermining state security” and “criminal conspiracy.” However, their lawyer claims these accusations are baseless and lack substantial evidence.
Michael Randrianirina seized power in October 2025 following a coup that was the result of weeks of youth-led protests known as “Gen Z Madagascar.” At that time, young people had hoped the new regime would provide a more democratic and transparent governance.
Now, those same youths are questioning the government’s intentions. Presidential spokesperson Harry Laurent Rahajasoa stated that there is a “separation of powers” in the country, asserting that the president has no direct involvement in these cases, as they fall under police and judicial processes.
Meanwhile, two of the arrested activists have been released and hospitalized due to deteriorating health. According to their lawyer, this decision was made due to their worsening condition. As of Friday, only Herizo Andriamanantena remains in custody, recognized as a prominent face of the movement.
Reports from L’Express Madagascar indicate that these arrests have heightened dissatisfaction and distrust among the youth. Many activists are now questioning whether the new military government is following the same path they initially sought to change.
Gen Z feels betrayed. The hopes that arose after the power shift are now slowly fading. The movement, which began under the leadership of Gen Z, stands at a new crossroads, where the fight for democracy and rights is far from over. Amnesty International has also called for the immediate release of the detained youths.
