Bhubaneswar, October 1 (Daily Kiran) : Odisha’s Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has urged citizens to take personal responsibility for keeping the capital city, Bhubaneswar, clean. Speaking at the ‘Cleanliness is Service’ campaign held at the renowned Khandagiri, he emphasized that if everyone does their part, Bhubaneswar could become the cleanest and most beautiful city in the country.
Currently, Bhubaneswar ranks ninth in national cleanliness standings. Majhi expressed optimism that with collective effort, the city could secure the top position. He reminded residents that the responsibility of maintaining cleanliness lies with all of us.
During the event, part of the ‘One Day, One Hour, Together’ initiative, the Chief Minister encouraged citizens to remain vigilant about their cleanliness duties. He stressed the importance of keeping not just their homes and immediate surroundings clean, but also the streets and neighborhoods in front of their residences.
Majhi advised residents to segregate wet and dry waste at home and to cooperate with sanitation workers by regularly handing over waste to cleaning vehicles. He implored citizens to refrain from littering the streets and to discourage others from doing so as well.
Drawing inspiration from Mahatma Gandhi, who emphasized the significance of cleanliness even before independence, Majhi highlighted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has transformed Gandhi’s vision into a nationwide movement through the ‘Cleanliness is Service’ campaign since 2014.
He praised the ‘One Day, One Hour, Together’ program as an innovative and commendable effort to engage society in cleanliness. Majhi acknowledged the contributions of sanitation workers and thanked them for their ongoing service, assuring that the state government is committed to ensuring their social security and housing.
He congratulated the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Puri Municipal Corporation officials, as well as sanitation workers, for Bhubaneswar and Puri being selected as ‘Ideal Clean Cities’ among 50 cities across the country. The event was also attended by Odisha’s Housing and Urban Development Minister Krishna Chandra Mahapatra, Bhubaneswar MLA Babu Singh, and BMC Mayor Sulochana Das.
