Raipur, March 13: The Water Life Mission in Chhattisgarh is proving to be a blessing for thousands of families in Mahasamund district. Launched to provide pure drinking water to every household in rural areas, the initiative aims to supply 55 liters of clean water per person daily through individual tap connections in homes, schools, and anganwadis. This program also alleviates the burden on women who previously had to travel long distances for water.
Residents who once struggled to access drinking water are now delighted to receive it directly from taps in their homes. The regular supply of water in the mornings and evenings has significantly reduced their hardships, and locals are expressing gratitude to the government for this initiative.
A prime example is the village of Pali, located about 32 kilometers from the Mahasamund headquarters. With a population of approximately 1,800, most residents belong to backward classes and primarily engage in agriculture. The village consists of around 341 families.
Just a few years ago, villagers had to go to wells, ponds, or other water sources located 500 meters to 1 kilometer away to fetch drinking water. Women, in particular, had to make multiple trips each day, consuming a lot of their time and energy.
The situation changed dramatically when a water tank was constructed at a cost of about 6.9 million rupees under the Water Life Mission, and tap connections were installed in the homes of 341 families. Now, villagers enjoy access to clean drinking water right at home. Water is supplied daily for one hour in the morning and one hour in the evening, effectively resolving their previous water-related issues.
Durgeshwari Dhruv, a resident of the village, shared, “Earlier, we had no water supply, and we had to go outside to fetch it. Now, with the tap connection, we have easy access to clean water. This saves us a lot of time, which I can now use to educate my children.”
Another villager, Jharna Masiha, noted that having clean water at home has helped prevent various illnesses. She used to go outside for water, but now she has access to clean water right in her home. According to her, this government initiative has been highly beneficial for the villagers.
Nilesh Sahu from the village mentioned that fetching drinking water from afar is no longer necessary, as they now have easy access to clean water at home, greatly improving their convenience.
Bhuneshwar Lodhi, the village sarpanch, stated that women previously faced significant challenges in fetching water. However, with tap connections installed in every home, water is now readily available. This has not only provided relief to women but also enhanced their safety. He confirmed that water supply is provided daily in the mornings and evenings.
Mahasamund Collector Vinay Kumar Langeh emphasized that the primary goal of the Water Life Mission is to ensure that villagers have access to pure and safe drinking water in their homes. The mission began in 2019, with a total of 1,130 plans developed for 1,117 villages in the district, aiming to connect approximately 240,000 families to tap water.
So far, 358 plans have been completed, providing regular access to clean drinking water for villagers. Additionally, tap connections have been established in the homes of nearly 200,000 families in the district.
