Challenges Facing Agentic AI in Chinas Fragmented App Ecosystem

New Delhi, March 8: A report has emerged regarding the ongoing controversy surrounding China’s Dobao phone. It highlights that agentic artificial intelligence can only thrive if it operates seamlessly across various apps and connected devices. However, China’s fragmented mobile ecosystem hinders such interoperability.

According to a report by Lawfare Media, China’s “all-in-one” apps like WeChat and Alipay create a closed ecosystem that prevents AI agents from accessing calendars, emails, chat logs, and payment credentials. Granting broad permissions across devices could compromise data privacy and security. The report identifies this issue as the root cause of the “Western world’s Open Cloud versus China’s Dobao phone controversy.”

The report states, “This means that when AI agents attempt to complete tasks using an app (such as viewing the content of a text message in WeChat discussing dinner plans), the task will fail unless the agent is permitted to read and act on information within that app’s closed ecosystem (walled garden).”

The Dobao phone features an agent capable of screen reading and functioning like a user. This has led major apps like Taobao, Alipay, and WeChat to block it due to fears of fraud and data leaks.

Since Google services are blocked in China, local Android smartphone manufacturers have developed their proprietary systems, akin to the open-source Android operating system, running on GSM (Global Mobile Service).

As a result, if Chinese users switch from one company’s phone to another, they must also change app stores, cloud services, assistants, push notifications, and many other services.

The report also notes that developers must adapt their apps to fit the various proprietary systems of different manufacturers if they wish to make their apps available in multiple countries. This adds further complexity to China’s manufacturing ecosystem.

However, the report indicates that there is now a race within China to establish rules and standards for agentic AI to address these challenges. The entity that succeeds will set guidelines for data access, security authentication, and other safety regulations.
