Jaipur, April 10: In a significant move to support farmers impacted by unseasonal rains, hailstorms, and adverse weather, the central government has relaxed wheat procurement rules for the ongoing Rabi season in Rajasthan.
This decision came after Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla raised concerns about farmers’ issues and called for necessary reforms at the central level.
The revised rules aim to ensure that farmers do not suffer financial losses due to crop damage caused by the weather. This change is expected to greatly benefit farmers across the state, particularly those in the Kota-Bundi region.
Under the new guidelines, the acceptable limit for wheat luster deficiency has been increased to 50%. Similarly, the threshold for shriveled and broken grains has been set at 15%. Additionally, the combined limit for damaged and partially damaged grains is now fixed at 6%. These adjustments were made in light of the recent rains and hailstorms that have affected crop quality.
The government reiterated its commitment to protecting farmers’ interests and ensuring procurement at the Minimum Support Price (MSP). By relaxing quality standards, the central government aims to maximize procurement, preventing farmers from being forced to sell their produce at lower prices in the open market.
Officials have been instructed to ensure a smooth procurement process across the state’s markets. Adequate arrangements are being made to prevent any inconvenience to farmers, and preparations are underway to handle the increased influx of produce.
This decision is expected to directly benefit millions of farmers in Rajasthan, providing them with significant relief amid challenging agricultural conditions. Furthermore, it will help stabilize the state’s agricultural economy, as affected crops will also be accepted under the government procurement system.
With the likelihood of an expedited procurement process, this is seen as a crucial step taken in a timely manner to secure farmers’ livelihoods.
