Mumbai, August 18: Renowned for his simplicity, sensitivity, and beautiful poetry, Gulzar is celebrating his birthday today. On this special occasion, actor Jackie Shroff extended his warm wishes to the legendary poet and filmmaker.
Jackie Shroff shared a heartfelt message on his Instagram stories alongside a picture of Gulzar, stating, “Gulzar Sahab, infinite birthday wishes to you. You will always reside in our hearts.”
Born in 1934 in the Dina area of Punjab, now part of Pakistan, Gulzar’s real name is Sampooran Singh Kalra. Through his writing and creativity, he has left a profound impact on the worlds of cinema and literature for decades.
Gulzar has carved out a unique identity in Hindi cinema, contributing as a lyricist, storyteller, poet, and director. His poetry evokes joy and transports readers to a divine realm. Notably, from the 1963 film “Bandi Ni” to the 2014 film “Kill Dil,” he has consistently evolved with time, making significant contributions to the industry.
Before becoming a celebrated writer, Gulzar held various small jobs. Upon arriving in Mumbai, he initially worked as a car mechanic. He began writing at a young age, often facing reprimands from his father for his passion.
While writing, he initially adopted the pen name Gulzar Deenvi, later simplifying it to just Gulzar. After the partition, he moved to Delhi and worked as an assistant to filmmaker Bimal Roy. He launched his career as a lyricist with the song “Mora Gora Ang Le Le” for the film “Bandi Ni,” collaborating with music director S.D. Burman.
Gulzar has penned lyrics for numerous iconic films, including “Anand,” “Mere Apne,” “Mausam,” “Maachis,” “Omkara,” “Kaminey,” “Dil Se…,” “Guru,” “Slumdog Millionaire,” “Raavan,” and “Bunty Aur Babli.” He has also written dialogues and screenplays for films like “Aashirwad,” “Anand,” and “Khamoshi.”
