Celebrating Birthdays: Three Cricketers with Brief Stints in Team India

Mumbai, August 3: Cricket in India enjoys unparalleled popularity and financial backing, making it a dream for many young athletes. However, not every cricketer realizes their ambition of playing for the national team, and even those who do often have limited opportunities.

Three cricketers, all born on August 3, had long domestic careers but brief experiences with the Indian national team.

Balwinder Singh Sandhu was born on August 3, 1956, in Mumbai. A right-handed batsman and fast bowler, he primarily made his mark as a bowler. Sandhu debuted for India in January 1983 and played his last international match against Pakistan on October 31, 1984. During his time with the national team, he participated in 8 Tests and 22 ODIs, taking 10 wickets in Tests and 16 in ODIs. He scored 214 runs in Tests, including two half-centuries, with a highest score of 71. Sandhu was also part of the Indian team that won the 1983 World Cup. He played for Mumbai from the 1980-81 season to 1986-87, taking 168 wickets in 55 first-class matches and 36 wickets in 42 List A matches.

Gopal Sharma was born on August 3, 1960, in Kanpur. A right-handed batsman and right-arm spinner, he represented Uttar Pradesh in domestic cricket. Between 1985 and 1990, Sharma played 5 Tests and 11 ODIs for India, claiming 10 wickets in both formats. He had a successful first-class career from the 1979-80 season to 1993-94, amassing 2,309 runs and 353 wickets in 104 matches, including 2 centuries and 11 half-centuries. In List A cricket, he scored 157 runs and took 45 wickets in 44 matches.

Apoorv Kumar Sengupta was born on August 3, 1939, in Lucknow. He was a right-handed batsman and a useful leg-spinner. Sengupta played just one Test for India in 1959 against the West Indies in Chennai, where he scored 9 runs. Unfortunately, he never got another chance to represent the national team. He played domestic cricket for Services from the 1958-59 season to 1967-68, scoring 1,695 runs in 45 first-class matches and taking 31 wickets. He passed away on September 14, 2013, in Noida.
