New Delhi, March 24: The Supreme Court has commenced a new hearing regarding the Manipur violence case. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking the cancellation of bail granted to Arun Khundongbam, also known as Nanao.
This case is linked to the ethnic violence in Manipur that occurred in May 2023, during which a mob stripped and paraded three women. The women were also victims of gang rape. The CBI informed the court that this is an extremely serious crime. The accused was involved in an incident that disrespected and violently assaulted these women.
The Guwahati High Court had granted bail to this accused, along with two others, last September. Now, the CBI has challenged this bail in the Supreme Court. During the hearing, the CBI’s lawyer emphasized that bail should not be granted in such heinous crimes.
Senior lawyer Nizam Pasha, representing the victims, stated in court that they are advocating for the victims. He suggested that if necessary, the court could appoint legal aid counsel for the victims to ensure justice.
The Supreme Court has issued notices to all relevant parties regarding the CBI’s petition. The court has requested responses from the accused and other parties. The next hearing will take place later, once all responses are received.
This incident is one of many under investigation by the CBI related to the ethnic violence in Manipur. The Supreme Court has already transferred the hearings of these cases to a special CBI court in Guwahati to ensure the safety of victims and witnesses and to facilitate a fair trial.
The accused faces charges of inciting riots, assaulting women’s dignity, gang rape, and violations under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The CBI argues that based on the evidence, the accused should not be granted bail, as this is a serious case of violence against women.
There is deep outrage among the victim’s families and the community regarding this incident. Many organizations have demanded justice. The petition is currently pending in the Supreme Court, and it will be clear only after the verdict whether the accused will be granted bail.
This case has captured national attention, as it involves women’s safety and the credibility of the justice system. The CBI is striving to ensure that all perpetrators are punished and that the victims receive justice.
