Lucknow, March 28: A CBI court in Lucknow has sentenced former Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Vinod Kumar Sharma of the CRPF, along with two other personnel, Satya Veer Singh and Teerath Pal Chaturvedi, to three years of rigorous imprisonment. The court also imposed a fine of ₹1.2 lakh on each of them. This verdict pertains to a corruption case related to the recruitment of constables in the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) registered the case against Sharma and others on February 23, 2009, based on information received from sources. The investigation revealed that Sharma had conspired with private individuals to accept bribes from candidates aspiring to join the CRPF as constables (General Duty).
Sharma allegedly provided intermediaries with advance information about the recruitment process and available vacancies, which encouraged potential candidates to pay hefty bribes in exchange for guaranteed selection.
Following the investigation, the CBI filed charges against the accused on November 23, 2010, and July 16, 2012. After a thorough hearing, the court found all three defendants guilty and imposed the corresponding sentences.
In a separate case, a CBI court in Chennai convicted former senior tax assistant Babu Prasad Kumar and six other individuals for their involvement in an income tax refund fraud. The court sentenced them to four years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a total fine of ₹2.4 lakh. This case was registered with the CBI on December 31, 2019, following a complaint from the Assistant Commissioner of Income Tax in Chennai.
The accused allegedly issued income tax refunds using fake documents and false identities between June 4, 2015, and August 31, 2019, causing a loss of approximately ₹2.38 crore to the income tax department. The investigation revealed that Babu Prasad Kumar played a key role in this fraud and attempted to conceal the illegal funds through family and associates.
After completing the investigation, the CBI filed a charge sheet against all seven accused on March 1, 2021. Following the trial, the court found them guilty and sentenced them accordingly.
