Guwahati, April 20: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has achieved a significant breakthrough in its ongoing Operation Chakra-V against cybercrime across the country. The agency has arrested the mastermind behind a network that illegally procured SIM cards and supplied them to cybercriminals.
The arrested individual, identified as Ubaid Ullah, was apprehended in Guwahati on April 19, 2026. He had been on the run for a considerable time, with a search for him ongoing since August 2025. Ullah managed a vast supply network of illegally issued SIM cards.
CBI investigations revealed that point-of-sale (POS) agents played a crucial role in this network. These agents were illegally issuing SIM cards, which were then used in various cybercrimes, including fraudulent digital arrests, loan scams, and investment frauds.
So far, the investigation has uncovered that the network amassed over 10,000 illegal SIM cards. Ullah transferred approximately 6.7 million rupees through various bank accounts to pay the POS agents involved.
Additionally, it was discovered that courier services were used for the delivery of these SIM cards to conceal identities and maintain the secrecy of the entire operation.
The CBI has conducted raids at around 45 locations across eight different states in connection with this case. During these operations, 10 POS agents involved in issuing illegal SIM cards were also arrested. Investigations are ongoing regarding the involvement of other key conspirators.
Officials state that the CBI is fully committed to bringing criminals to justice through coordinated efforts with other agencies and the use of advanced intelligence techniques.
