Kolkata, March 23: In a significant cash seizure ahead of the upcoming assembly elections, authorities in West Bengal have recovered over ₹3.7 lakh. This operation took place near the West Bengal-Assam border in the Cooch Behar district.
During routine checks at two separate checkpoints within the Bakhshirhat police station area, police and Static Surveillance Team (SST) officials intercepted three vehicles.
In connection with this incident, three individuals, including a resident of Assam, have been taken into custody for questioning. The discovery of this cash has caused a stir throughout the district as the state prepares for elections.
According to police reports, on Sunday night, officers stationed at the Jorai More checkpoint stopped a four-wheeler with a West Bengal license plate entering from Assam. A search revealed a bag containing ₹57,700 inside the vehicle.
The cash was confiscated after the driver, Birendra Saha from Darjeeling, failed to provide any valid documentation for the money. He was subsequently arrested.
Meanwhile, police at the Sankosh checkpoint searched a vehicle belonging to Vikas Saha, a resident of Barabisha in Kumargram, and found ₹1,14,300 in cash. Vikas Saha was also unable to present any documentation for the funds, leading to his arrest.
On Monday morning, SST officials and police at the Sankosh checkpoint again stopped a vehicle with an Assam license plate entering West Bengal. Upon inspection, they discovered ₹1,99,500 in cash. The driver, Totan Bhumik from Assam, could not provide valid documentation for the money and was taken into custody for further questioning.
According to election commission regulations, traveling with cash exceeding the prescribed limit without proper documentation is an offense. As a result, the police seized the cash from all three vehicles due to the lack of valid paperwork.
Currently, the Bakhshirhat police are investigating whether this money was intended for any illegal activities or to influence voters ahead of the elections.
