Captain Iyer Discusses Vaibhav Suryas Wait for T20 Opportunity

Captain Shreyas Iyer explains why young opener Vaibhav Surya hasnt played in the T20 series against West Indies.

Bengaluru, October 18 (Daily Kiran) : In Bengaluru, young opener Vaibhav Surya has yet to make his debut in the ongoing T20 series against the West Indies, which consists of five matches. Indian captain Shreyas Iyer addressed the situation after the fifth T20 was washed out due to rain, providing insights into why Surya has remained on the sidelines.

Iyer noted that the consistent performances of top-order batsmen Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, and Ishan Kishan have limited opportunities for Surya. “I understand what he must be feeling, especially after a fantastic IPL season,” Iyer remarked. “But sometimes you have to wait. We have two outstanding openers who are scoring runs consistently.”

The captain reassured Surya, saying, “I keep telling him that he will get his chance. Samson and Abhishek have delivered for us, even winning the World Cup. If you maintain consistency in your process and keep your mindset light, don’t dwell too much on when your opportunity will come.”

Surya made his senior team debut on July 4 against England in Manchester but had a modest performance in that series. However, he shone in the T20 series against Zimbabwe, scoring 151 runs, including two half-centuries, and was named Player of the Series. Despite his impressive run in the Asian Games, where he scored 38 runs off 21 balls against Sri Lanka and 15 runs off nine balls in the final against Pakistan, he has not been given a chance in the following Afghanistan series.

Looking ahead, Surya is set to join the Indian squad for a five-match T20 series in New Zealand starting October 22. It remains to be seen if he will finally get the opportunity to showcase his talent in this upcoming series.
