Islamabad, April 19: Bushra Bibi, the wife of former Prime Minister Imran Khan and the leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has requested the suspension of her sentence in the Al-Qadir Trust case, citing health concerns.
According to reports from the Pakistani newspaper The Express Tribune, an application has been submitted to the Islamabad High Court (IHC) regarding this matter. This week, Bushra Bibi underwent eye surgery at a private hospital in Rawalpindi.
Jail officials confirmed that she was transferred to a private hospital for the procedure. Dr. Nadeem Qureshi, a retina specialist at Al Shifa Eye Hospital, performed the surgery.
After spending one night in the hospital, she was discharged and returned to Adiala Jail. Officials indicated that further examinations would be conducted based on medical advice.
The application also requests that the IHC summon the head of the ophthalmology department at Al Shifa Trust Eye Hospital, the jail superintendent, and the deputy superintendent to present essential documents related to Bushra Bibi’s surgery. These documents should include her complete medical record, operation notes, diagnosis, and treatment history.
The application states, “The applicant should be immediately transferred to Al Shifa Trust Eye Hospital, Rawalpindi, for proper post-operative medical supervision, and relevant jail officials should ensure regular, accurate, and uninterrupted access for the applicant’s lawyer and family members as per the law and previous legal directives.”
Bushra Bibi’s lawyer, Salman Safdar, has submitted an application to inform the court about her health status ahead of the hearing scheduled for April 22, where the IHC division bench, led by Chief Justice Sardar Sarfraz Dogar, will reconsider the request to suspend the sentences of Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi.
Reports indicate that Bushra Bibi has been sentenced to seven years in prison. The application also mentions that her prolonged detention, repeated delays in decisions regarding her suspension request, and continuous denial of access to her lawyer have severely impacted her health, necessitating the surgical procedure.
According to the application, Bushra Bibi’s appeal has been pending for over a year, and her ongoing detention serves no beneficial purpose, potentially causing irreparable harm.
The application further states that her family was abruptly informed by jail officials about the surgery due to some complications, without prior notice or consultation.
It raises serious concerns that neither the lawyer nor any family member was informed or consulted before the medical procedure, nor were they made aware of any deterioration in her health that could lead to such surgical intervention.
The application claims that the health procedure was conducted in a completely opaque manner, failing to meet basic standards of transparency and denying the applicant the opportunity to consult with her lawyer or family.
