Budget 2026 Boosts India’s Healthcare and Pharma Sectors: Anupriya Patel

New Delhi: Union Minister of State Anupriya Patel stated that the Union Budget 2026 has made all necessary provisions to sustain and strengthen India’s healthcare system.

Speaking on Sunday, Patel highlighted that the budget presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman focuses particularly on the health, pharmaceutical, and chemical sectors.

She said, “India has moved firmly on the path of self-reliance, and today no sector remains untouched by this progress.”

Appreciating the ₹10,000 crore Bio-Pharma Power Mission, the Minister of State said it will help India become a major manufacturing hub for biopharma in the coming years, marking a significant step towards self-reliance.

Addressing the rising demand for allied health professionals, Patel mentioned that over the next five years, 10,000 allied health professionals will be created nationwide, along with the establishment of new institutions.

To strengthen elderly care, the budget includes provisions for training one lakh multi-skilled care professionals.

Moreover, to promote medical value tourism, five regional medical centres will be set up across the country. These centres, in collaboration with state governments and service sectors, will provide education, clinical care, and research facilities for the public and patients.

Notably, Patel emphasized the expansion of mental health care facilities. She said, “Until now, there was only one reputed institution for mental health challenges in South India, known as NIMHANS. To serve people in North India facing mental health issues, the budget has approved the establishment of additional NIMHANS centres in Satti, Tezpur, and Ranchi.”

She also welcomed improvements in existing mental health insurance schemes and the exemption of customs duties on medicines for 17 types of cancer and 7 rare diseases.

These measures reflect the government’s commitment to enhancing healthcare infrastructure and accessibility across India.
