What Is the Blue Aadhaar Card?
The Blue Aadhaar Card is issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) to children aged five years or younger. Like the regular Aadhaar card, it contains a 12-digit unique identification number, but it is marked by a distinct blue color. Since biometric data like fingerprints and iris scans are not collected from children below the age of five, the Blue Aadhaar contains only a photograph of the child along with demographic details.
This Aadhaar is linked to one of the parent’s Aadhaar cards and is primarily generated using the child’s birth certificate and the Aadhaar details of the parents. It serves as an official identity document and can be useful for school admissions, healthcare services, and availing benefits under various welfare schemes.
Validity and Mandatory Update After 5 Years
The Blue Aadhaar is valid only until the child turns five. After that, it must be updated with the child’s biometric data, including fingerprints, iris scan, and a fresh photograph. This step is necessary to ensure that the Aadhaar remains accurate and can be used as a valid ID in the future. Without this update, the Blue Aadhaar card becomes invalid for further use.
UIDAI has made it mandatory to update the Aadhaar record once the child crosses five years of age, followed by another update when the child turns 15, to ensure biometric accuracy throughout growing years.
How to Apply for a Blue Aadhaar Card
Parents can apply for a Blue Aadhaar card through the official UIDAI website. The process involves the following steps:
-
Visit the official UIDAI portal: https://uidai.gov.in
-
Book an appointment at your nearest Aadhaar enrollment center.
-
Carry essential documents such as the child’s birth certificate, parent’s Aadhaar card, and proof of address.
-
Fill out the child’s Aadhaar registration form.
-
Once the application is processed, the Blue Aadhaar card is generated and sent via post to the registered address within 60 days.
Why It’s Important
In India, Aadhaar is often a requirement for accessing numerous government services, including immunization programs, scholarships, and welfare schemes. Having a Blue Aadhaar ensures that children are brought into the national identity system from an early age and can benefit from early childhood development initiatives.
Parents are advised to track the 5-year validity and schedule the mandatory biometric update to avoid any future complications in using the Aadhaar for official purposes.
