BJP Faces Growing Opposition Ahead of Kerala Elections

Thiruvananthapuram, March 18: The political landscape in Kerala is heating up as the state prepares for the assembly elections scheduled for April 9. The release of the BJP’s first candidate list has sparked open dissent within the party. Similar internal conflicts are also surfacing in Congress and CPI(M), as the election campaign kicks off.

The situation is particularly critical for the BJP, which currently has no representatives in the 140-member assembly. After a historic victory in 2016, the party won the Nemom seat in Thiruvananthapuram district but subsequently lost it.

This election presents a crucial opportunity for the party to solidify its presence, but ongoing disputes could undermine these efforts.

Discontent has surged within the BJP following the exclusion of senior leaders like Kummanam Rajasekharan and P.S. Sreedharan Pillai from the candidate list. Grassroots workers perceive this as a disregard for experienced leaders, leading to protests in several districts.

The most significant controversy revolves around the decision to transfer district president Sandeep Vachaspati from Chengannur to Haripad. Local activists argue that Vachaspati had a strong foothold in Chengannur, and this change could weaken the party’s chances of winning.

Additionally, the allocation of the Kaduthuruthy seat to BDJS and the denial of a ticket to Reji Lukos have sparked discontent among certain segments of the Knanaya community, raising concerns about losing the Christian vote bank.

Questions are also being raised in RSS-affiliated circles regarding the lack of opportunities for prominent leaders in seats like Aranmula and Ranni. There is speculation about whether P.S. Sreedharan Pillai will be included in the next list.

Concerns about Rajeev Chandrasekhar’s leadership are emerging, with some accusing the party of overlooking the ground realities of Kerala in strategic decisions.

Despite this turmoil, state leadership has downplayed the situation, asserting that differences will be resolved soon and that a complete candidate list will be released shortly. However, the party faces a significant challenge in appeasing senior leaders before the next list is finalized, as internal strife could adversely affect their electoral performance.
